Morocco adventure in the north. Welcome, Arrive in Tangier by boat or plane, and we’ll meet you and take you to your accommodation on the first day of your vacation. Tangier is an old port with a long history of guarding the Mediterranean’s entrance. It boasts a bustling medina and a brand new town.
We’ll spend the morning visiting Tangier after a good night’s sleep. Head west of Tangier, through mountains, to Cap Spartel this afternoon. Eagles and migrating birds can be seen here on their way to Spain or returning for the winter. Visit the Grottes d’ Hercule, which are located 5 kilometers south of the lighthouse at Cap Spartel. After digging the straights between Europe and Africa, Hercules is said to have rested in the caverns.
We’ll leave Tangier and travel west along the coast and up the mountainous road to Ceuta (Sebta to the locals). There are beautiful views of the Mediterranean, and you may hike up Jebel Musa, which is opposite Gibraltar’s rock (Jebel Tarik). Continue your journey down the coast after lunch at Tetouan, past the small fishing port of Cabo Negro, and then into the highlands to Chefchaouen. Until the early twentieth century, this town, founded in 1471, was relatively secluded. Chefchaouen, high in the Rif mountains, is painted in stunning tones of blue, a remnant of the city’s Jewish community.
In Chefchaouen, a refuge of calm and tranquillity, spend a day at leisure. Chefchaouen’s medina, the silk and wool weaving area, the main square with its cafes, and the souks are all worth visiting. Perhaps haggle for a kilim in the market, where you can get some great bargains.
Your journey to Fes today will take you via the Rif Mountains. The Rif mountains are still largely unknown to travelers, partially because of their remoteness and partly due to the hashish farmed in fields in hidden valleys. However, with your guide and driver by your side, you will be able to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Morocco.
Fes, the world’s oldest and largest Medieval city, is a swarm of activity and extremely intriguing. Spend the day touring the souks, palaces, and views from the museum and old Kasbah just outside the city walls in this historic city.
Visit the old Roman city of Volubilis in the foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains this morning before leaving the city. Amazing mosaics, gates, palaces, and the forum are still visible — the city is so enormous that it hasn’t been fully excavated yet. In the afternoon, visit the town of Moulay Idriss, which was just recently opened to non-Muslims and is named after Fes’ founder. Spend the night in Meknes, the imperial capital of Morocco.
Return to Tangier from Meknes through the Rif Mountains and the town of Ksar-el Kabir. Spend your final evening free for any last-minute souvenir shopping or a delicious lunch at one of the many delicious eateries.
Departure to return you to the airport or port.
