Excursion itinerary

This excursion to Essaouira takes place from Marrakech, in the place that we agree, such as the door of your accommodation. We recommend setting the meeting at 7:30 in the morning in order to get the most out of the journey and the visit to the destination, although we can modify that time depending on the needs of the group.

Along the way, we will cross immense Argan forests, from where the precious Argan oil is extracted. We can stop at one of the cooperatives that exist in the area and thus see its traditional production, which is currently focused not only on food but also on cosmetics and the alternative medicine sector. The estimated time for this journey is 2 hours and a half when no stops are made. But since we will make this small stop along the way, the duration of the trip will be approximately 3 hours.

Therefore, the outbound trip of this excursion to Essaouira arrives in this city at approximately 10:00 a.m. Behind the walls of this town, which was an old Portuguese citadel and was once called Mogador, many picturesque corners steeped in history are hidden. You will be able to discover them yourself as soon as you set foot on land and do some of the activities that are organized and that we mention below.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. or at the agreed time we will meet again to return to Marrakech, on a non-stop return tour: about 2 and a half hours to reach the Red City at around 6:00 p.m.

Essaouira with its beauty and history

Essaouira is a peaceful fortified city bathed by the Atlantic that has become one of the most fascinating places on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco. Located about 200 kilometers from Marrakech, it has a population of about 80,000 inhabitants. It is also known by its old Portuguese name of Mogador and by the nickname “The Pearl of the Atlantic”.

Culture of this city is rich in ancient traditions and influences, not only sub-Saharan Arab or Berber, but also Jewish, have had great importance throughout its history. It was reconquered in the 18th century by Sidi Mohamed Ben Abadallah, who rebuilt it, making it the main port of Morocco in the 19th century, where Christian and Jewish communities settled.

The proximity to Europe and the French protectorate have undoubtedly influenced the culture and its architecture. Its medina or historic center, listed since 2001 by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, is made up of wide streets full of galleries that lead to numerous artisan workshops, small shops of all kinds, cafes and restaurants. Its crafts are rich and varied, witness to cultural exchange.

Another great attraction of Essaouira is its immense beach, a long stretch of fine white sand about 10 kilometers long. Thanks to the trade winds that hit it, this city is known as the city of the wind, making it a place of worship for many windsurfers who come from all over the world.

Culturally speaking, Essaouira stands out especially for its music. Every year the Gnawa International Music Festival – World Music is held, one of the most important events in the country that enjoys great worldwide recognition. Its streets, squares, souks, beaches and other public places where the show takes place, are transformed into a huge stage.

Gnawa music combines rhythms such as hypnotic trance fused with a number of current music such as jazz, blues and rock. The festival aims to develop a decidedly Moroccan project of authenticity and modernity in Morocco. The Gnawa festival also carries a universal message based on peace and the union of cultures. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.

In addition to many other treasures such as argan oil, fishing in Essaouira is an important activity sector thanks to its fishing port, in the heart of the city, where the artisanal shipyards are located, unique in the world.

Tourism here is in full expansion for being an exceptional spa place, for its natural reserve on the nearby Mogador Island, and of course, for its historical treasures that transport you to the past.
