Mosques are generally stunning structures, both on the outside and inside… but the latter is difficult to verify for non-Muslims because the vast majority are closed to tourists. However, there are a few exceptions, which we will discuss in this post: the mosques that can be visited in Morocco are listed below.
Fortunately, one of the few mosques in Morocco that can be visited is also the largest and most gorgeous. We’re talking about Casablanca’s Hassan II mosque. Fortunately for our visitors, it is also a component of the circuits that begin or terminate in this city. If you want to learn everything there is to know about this magnificent temple, we recommend reading this separate page.
Tinmel Mosque, In The High Atlas
Tinmel, a little village in the High Atlas highlands around 100 kilometers south of Marrakech and at about 1,300 meters in height, has another mosque worth visiting. It should be noted that this mosque is no longer in use and that it had to be renovated recently to prevent its disappearance because it was in ruins. But, in exchange, it is breathtakingly beautiful, both in terms of its architecture and its surroundings, with breathtaking views from its exteriors.
Furthermore, it has a lengthy and fascinating past. It was constructed during the Almohad period, in the middle of the 12th century. In truth, the temple was built as a tribute to Muhammad ibn Tumart, the founder of the dynasty that eventually ruled over all of what is now Morocco, as well as Al-Andalus on the other side of the Gibraltar Strait.
The most observant travelers will notice similarities with Marrakech’s Koutoubia mosque. Not by chance, it was built around the same time and by the same person: Abd al-Mumin, the Almohad leader, and Muhammad ibn Tumart’s successor. The ornate arches framed in alfiz and the reddish tint of the construction are all quite similar, as are the brick and stone ashlars.
Although it is no longer possible to attend prayer sessions within a mosque, it does help us to have a better understanding of the interior arrangement by identifying aspects like the mihrab, which is the niche or niche facing Mecca to which prayer devotees must be directed.
Alternatives to visitable mosques in Morocco
Those who wish to view the rest of Morocco’s mosques will have to make do with looking at them from the outside. Many of them, however, is still worth seeing because of their slim silhouette and unusual embellishment, particularly on the minaret. The following is a list of the most important ones that we normally include in our circuits and visits:
