Visa requirements for Morocco vary based on your nationality. Travelers from the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can visit Morocco for up to 90 days without a visa. If you come from a country that needs a visa, you must apply for one at the Moroccan Consulate before your trip. Always check with your local Moroccan embassy for the latest visa rules, as they can change.
To stay connected during your trip, buy a local Moroccan SIM card when you arrive. The best providers are Maroc Telecom, Orange, and INWI. Data plans are cheap, with 10GB priced around $10 to USD 15.
Morocco has a rich mix of cultures but also has conservative traditions. In cities like Marrakech and Casablanca, people dress casually. However, it is essential to dress modestly to respect local customs. When visiting religious sites, women should wear loose-fitting clothes, long skirts or pants, and a lightweight scarf. Men can wear shorts and T-shirts, but wearing long pants in more traditional areas like Fes is better.
Tourist scams happen in many places, including Morocco. One common scam features a “fake guide” who offers help but later asks for money. Some travelers also report being told their passport is damaged or that their luggage needs to be checked, leading to someone who looks official asking for a bribe. Taxi drivers may charge extra, especially if they don’t use the meter. To avoid problems, be careful, politely decline offers you didn’t ask for, and agree on prices before accepting services.
Morocco is a great place to visit any time of year, but the best time depends on what you want to do. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times for sightseeing and desert trips because the weather is pleasant. Summer (June to August) is hot in cities like Marrakech and the Sahara, but coastal towns like Essaouira remain comfortable. Winter (December to February) is mild elsewhere, though the Atlas Mountains can see snow, making it ideal for hiking.
Morocco is usually safe for tourists. There is a strong police presence in major cities and tourist areas. However, it’s essential to stay alert. Women travelers might face street harassment, but dressing conservatively and confidently saying no can help. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and watch your belongings in crowded places. Most travelers find Morocco friendly and welcoming if they use common sense and basic safety precautions.
The cost of traveling in Morocco varies based on where you stay, how you get around, and what you do. A mid-range 10-day trip usually costs between $900 and $1,500 per person. This price covers hotels, meals, transportation, and guided tours. As a budget traveler, you can spend less using public transport and staying in budget riads. For luxury travelers, there are 5-star hotels and private tours available.
A well-organized itinerary is key to enjoying Morocco without stress. Start by deciding on the best time to visit, choosing your accommodation type (riads, desert camps, hotels), and planning your transportation. Booking guided tours can help maximize your experience, especially for desert trips and historical sites. Travel agencies like ours provide customized Morocco trip planners, handling everything from accommodations to local experiences, ensuring a hassle-free journey.
The Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the currency in Morocco. You can use credit cards in hotels and larger restaurants, but it’s best to have cash for shopping in souks, taking taxis, and eating at small local places. ATMs are available in major cities, and you can exchange money at airports and banks. Always check the exchange rate before your trip to get the best value for your money.
Morocco offers various places to stay that fit different budgets and preferences. You can have an authentic experience by staying in a traditional Moroccan riad in the medina or relaxing in a historic kasbah in the mountains. For a magical experience, spend a night in a luxury desert camp under the stars in the Sahara. Budget travelers can also find affordable Berber camps and boutique guesthouses nationwide.
Moroccan cuisine combines flavors from Berber, Arabic, and French cooking. Try tagine, couscous, and pastilla. Don’t miss street foods like Msemmen, which are Moroccan pancakes. Enjoy traditional mint tea in local cafés. If you want to be adventurous, sample dishes like camel meat or prawn tagine in coastal cities.
Morocco has many ways to get around. For long trips, you can use ONCF trains or CTM buses. In cities, you can take petit taxis or grand taxis. If you want more freedom, you can rent a car, but be careful of the traffic. Many travelers choose guided road trips in Morocco, with private drivers and local guides, for a relaxing experience.
