9 days and 8 nights
Your journey in Morocco would take many different paths from Casablanca. And the one we give to you in this 9-day tour from Casablanca through the imperial cities is one of the most interesting: we will see the country’s Imperial Cities, travel through the Sahara desert, and see the most beautiful parts of the north. As a result, it’s an unequaled blend of culture and environment, with beauty and authenticity taking center stage.
All this in a 9-day tour from the Casablanca route, accompanied by the professionals of our agency, who will make you enjoy the experience safely and optimize the times of each day. In any case, this circuit also offers free time to enjoy each destination to the taste of each group.
Below we show you in detail what is the itinerary of this 9-Day Desert Tour From Casablanca
Our services will begin at the Casablanca airport terminal for those arriving from another country: our driver will be waiting there with a private vehicle for the transport to the city center. If you are already in Casablanca, we can meet in a location that is more convenient for you, such as your hotel.
The spectacular Hassan II Mosque, perched on an artificial peninsula reclaimed from the sea, will be the first destination to visit in any case. It has the distinction of being one of the highest mosques in the Islamic world, with a minaret that rises to a height of roughly 200 meters. And, fortunately for us, we’ll be able to go inside because it’s one of the few mosques that welcome non-believers.
After touring the mosque, we’ll take a road trip to Rabat, which is only an hour away from Casablanca. It is the country’s capital and one of Morocco’s Imperial Cities. The Hassan Tower, built in the 12th century in the Almohad style, and the Kasbah of the Oudayas, both from the same period, have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The views of the city and adjacent Salé, which is located on the other bank of the Bu Regreg River, are breathtaking from this last castle.
Because the visit to this fascinating city is free, you will have the opportunity to customize your tour according to your preferences and our recommendations. The Mohamed V Mausoleum, the medina souk, and the Mohamed VI Museum of Modern Art are all worthwhile additions. They’ll all be near to the riad where you’ll spend your first night because it’ll be in the city center.
Our driver will pick you up after breakfast at the riad in Rabat and take you north. Chaouen is situated between the Rif mountains. Because its old medina is colored in that distinctive color, this town, also known as “the blue city,” lives on in the minds of those who visit it.
During your time in Chaouen, you can schedule your days according to your preferences and speed. The kasbah (now the Ethnographic Museum) and the overlooks with panoramic views of the medina and its surrounds are two of the most popular options. It’s also worth getting lost in its quaint streets, which are festooned with flowers, lined with craft shops, and sprinkled with local art galleries.
You will spend the night at a riad in the medina, close to the city’s major square, the square Uta el-Hammam, which is surrounded by many charming shops and stores.
The third day of this trip is jam-packed with cultural highlights. As a result, following breakfast in the riad in Chaouen, we will return to our vehicle and go to the first of them: Volubilis, Morocco’s best surviving Roman archaeological site. Temple columns, artistic mosaics on the pavements, commemorative arches, and an urban plot that is still visible on the ground illustrate the prominence that this city acquired during the era of emperors such as Marco Antonio or Caracalla. It’s no surprise, then, that UNESCO has designated this magnificent location as a World Heritage Site.
After this historical journey to the time of the Roman Empire, we will continue our journey by road to Meknes. It is another Imperial City that has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since its medieval medina maintains much of the appearance that Sultan Moulay Ismail bestowed on it at the end of the 17th century. While strolling through the streets, one can come upon his mausoleum and elements that remind us of his illustrious history, such as the wall gates that accentuate Bab Mansour.
The path to Fez will be continued in the final section of the day. The guided tour, which will take place the next day, will focus on its magnificent medina and bustling popular ambiance, but you will be able to make your first encounter with them in the last hours of the second day. The riad where you will spend the night is in the heart of the city, so it will be convenient for this reason.
Imperial City, a World Heritage Site, and one of the Islamic world’s spiritual and cultural centers. It is clear from this letter of introduction that Fez needs to be explored in full on a guided trip. As a result, following breakfast at the riad, you will meet our official local guide and the two of you will tour the city’s most noteworthy sights together.
Our guide has planned a tour that will take us to the medina’s main attractions, including the Karaouine mosque and the University its houses, which are regarded as one of the world’s oldest. Alternatively, there are madrassas, such as Bou Inania or Attarine, dedicated to Koranic study. Or popular spots like Nejjarine Square and its eponymous fountain, the renowned tanners’ district, and the always bustling souks and markets.
Fez’s old core is so extensive that you’ll have to leave some areas of interest for the afternoon. The Golden Gates of the Royal Palace, the Mellah (Jewish neighborhood), and museums like le Borj Nord are some of the attractions that can be scheduled during this period.
Of course, this will be an excellent time to shop in Fez’s famed artisan shops, which sell high-end things such as leather, wood, ceramics, and metals. Without a doubt, a day that deserves to be savored until the very last second before retiring to your riad in the heart of the city.
The fifth day is the longest: after breakfast in a riad in the heart of Fez, we’ll go south on a road journey that will take us to the desert’s heart. We will leave early and begin ascending the Middle Atlas mountains shortly after starting the journey.
This is Ifrane, nicknamed “the Moroccan Switzerland” by locals. The reason for this is its unusual architecture, which is more Alps-like than these latitudes, with gabled roofs. However, because of its elevation (about 1,700 meters above sea level) and placement between mountains, it has a very humid climate, with plenty of snowfall in the winter and a white-dominated atmosphere the rest of the year.
Our next trip is the Ifrane National Park, which is abundant in cedars and is situated close to neighboring Azrou. Many people refer to it as the Monkey Forest because it is home to a huge population of Barbary macaques, an endangered species and the only primate found north of the Sahara.
We’ll continue the journey by road into the Middle Atlas after getting to know this unusual area. The descent that we will begin at that time will lead us into the Ziz Valley, where palm groves and farms thrive despite the aridity of the region.
On this route, we will arrive in Erfoud, a little town well-known in the world of paleontology for the important fossils unearthed there, including some dinosaurs. Soon after, we’ll arrive in Merzouga, more than 650 kilometers from Casablanca, where the journey began.
In Merzouga, we will simply change modes of transportation: our car will remain parked, and each of us will ride a dromedary across the wonderful dunes of Erg Chebbi, which have an incredible texture and color. We’ll arrive at our tent camp amid the desert after a couple of hours of silent walking. They’ll be waiting for us with a cup of Berber tea and dinner, as local tradition dictates.
One of the tents, with all the conveniences inside, will be your accommodation, with the classic design utilized by desert nomads. Outside, on the other hand, there will be a stunning sky full of stars, which will shine with a strength and purity that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world.
On this sixth day we leave the desert of Merzouga, but not before enjoying a magical and unique experience: watching the sunrise in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, where the lights of dawn provide unique tones and nuances in the immense territory of sand dunes. that will open before our eyes.
Following that, we will have breakfast in the tent camp before returning to Merzouga on our dromedaries. Before or after this point, depending on the contracted package, there will be time for a shower, either in a Merzouga hotel or in the camp.
Returning to the road, we’ll first stop in Rissani, a little town with a medieval medina and sites that are hard to come by in the twenty-first century, such as a donkey parking lot and a typical market where smells and colors collide. It is also the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, of which the current ruler is a member.
After that, we’ll drive between hamadas, parched hills, and palm plantations, advancing our odometer. The Todra Gorges, a beautiful rocky gorge through which the humble river of the same name flows, will be reached in this manner.
For millennia, this sheet of water has chiseled this place, creating an incredible gorge through which aficionados of this activity from all over the world can walk and even climb.
The road gets winding here, as we shall see later on the journey, but it will eventually give way to broader areas typical of the Dades Valley and the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, so named because of the seemingly infinite number of Berber fortifications we will pass through during this part. We’ll also go to the Valley of the Roses, which is the name given to a flower that is farmed for the benefit of the local inhabitants, who use it to make cosmetics, have traditional celebrations, and much more.
Ouarzazate is the target for today. This city is home to the hotel where you will dine and sleep. But first, if time allows, we’ll visit the Kasbah of Taourirt, which is located on the outskirts of town and was formerly home to Thami El Glaoui, Lord of Altas and Pasha of Marrakech.
As a result, in contrast to the adobe facade, interior rooms with exotic and vibrant decorations are preserved. Depending on your schedule, another option is to go to its famed film studios, which are used in big seventh-art films and have earned Morocco the nickname “Hollywood of Morocco.”
The circuit’s seventh day will take us through very different settings, from the desert to high mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. We will begin the day with breakfast at our hotel in Ouarzazate, followed by a visit to the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified complex of immense value that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The adobe architecture of its buildings and walls is a remarkable illustration of the Berber people’s talent for creating structures that are in perfect harmony with the environment. Because of its good condition, it has been used as a film set in blockbusters like Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia, to mention a few.
Following the visit, we will start our journey by road, which will soon begin rising through the High Atlas Mountains. We’ll stop at the kasbah of Telouet, another of Thami El Glaoui’s residential castles in Marrakech. As a result, there will be a strong resemblance to Taourirt’s, albeit with certain differences.
The panoramic views from the port of Tizi n’Tichka will amaze you: the High Atlas peaks rise like an insurmountable natural barrier, with snow on their highest summits for much of the year and little towns dotted along their slopes. The road begins its descent towards Marrakech from here.
You’ll arrive in the afternoon, with enough time to take a leisurely stroll about the Red City. You will notice the fast speed and lively atmosphere in the medina, where your riad will be located, during your first meeting.
UNESCO designated Marrakech as a World Heritage Site, and it is Morocco’s most visited city. It is worth discovering slowly and with the assistance of a local guide for these and many more reasons. After having breakfast on the riad and entering the medina, you will proceed in this manner.
The Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the Bahia Palace are some of the places of importance to visit during the morning guided tour. Jemaa El-Fna Square is also a must-see, as it has been designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
On the other hand, you will have free time in the afternoon to do as you please. Some visitors choose to go to more attractions, such as the museums or the Majorelle Gardens. Others, on the other hand, are drawn to the souks and local craft shops, which are always brimming with high-quality things. The same gorgeous riad will also give you with a well-deserved relaxation at night.
The journey comes to a close 9 days after landing in Casablanca. It will be determined whether the flight itinerary allows a final walkthrough of Marrakech for last-minute purchases after breakfast at the guesthouse and check-out.
In any case, our driver will arrive at the agreed-upon time to pick you up for your airport trip. And we’ll say our goodbyes already in the terminal, grateful for the faith given in us and looking forward to a new meeting to continue visiting Morocco’s other fascinating regions.
