When combining Fes, Rabat, and Essaouira with Casablanca and Marrakech, most visitors to Morocco plan a trip of 8 to 10 days. If you only want to visit Northern Morocco, you can do so in 6 or 7 days at a leisurely pace.
Below we show you in detail what is the itinerary of this 8-day from Fes Morocco Itinerary to Marrakech.
Your guide will be waiting for you when you arrive in Fes to take you to your Riad in the center of the medina.
Our 8-day exploratory tour from Fes Morocco Itinerary to Marrakech will begin with a visit to the old city (Fes), which was formerly regarded as the Mecca of the West and the Athena of Africa. With a population of almost 1 million, it is the country’s second-largest metropolis after Casablanca. This city is the country’s former capital and one of four imperial cities. Fez is divided into three sections, the oldest of which is Fez el Bali, which is enclosed by a large wall and contains about 9000 narrow lanes and alleys.
Fez-Jdid, or New Fes, is home to the Mellah, or Jewish district, as well as the Ville Nouvelle, which was built during the French rule. UNESCO has designated Fez el Bali as a World Heritage Site. It has the world’s largest medina. The oldest university in the world, the University of Al-Karaouine, was founded in AD 859 and is set among its small alleyways and alleys. This institution is still operational today.
We travel to Volubilis after breakfast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it has the largest and finest preserved Roman remains in North Africa. Despite the damage inflicted by the earthquake in 1755, this major Roman town was able to preserve several intricate and magnificent mosaics. Our next stop is Meknes, the Imperial city of the Roman Empire, which was originally called Miknasa after the Berber tribe that came here in the 10th century.
As we travel from the old city, Meknes, to Morocco’s modern capital, Rabat, we learn more about the country’s fascinating past. We stop at the famed Mohammed V Mausoleum, Hassan Tower, and the charming walled Kasbah of Oudaias for a short break.
Our tour continues on the fourth day with a visit to the majestic Hassan II Mosque’s exteriors, which showcase the finest work Islamic craftsmen can make, and we learn about Casablanca’s historical significance to Morocco. In the early afternoon, we board our train for the four-hour ride to Marrakech. This excellent trip allows us to reflect on the North’s rich history while also preparing us for a different side of Morocco.
In the evening, we will have time to stretch our legs and explore the famed Jemaa el Fna Square, which is the center of Marrakech. Because it was where Sultans used to exhibit the heads of their adversaries, the name literally means ‘place of death.’ It is now a site of entertainment for both Moroccan and foreign visitors, with food shops, snake charmers, water-sellers, traveling musicians, and acrobats.
Our Marrakech exploratory tour will include a private Medina guided tour as an option. You’ll see the famed Koutoubia Mosque, the Medina, and its souks, and learn about some of Marrakech’s hidden gems, including the Ali Ben Youssef Koranic School, the Saadian the Bahia Palace and Majorelle Gardens, and a night in a Medina Riad.
This trip will depart from Essaouira in the morning when we will drive to Essaouira for an introductory tour of this charming old Portuguese fishing port on the Atlantic coast. The town was founded in the 15th century, but the current town was built around 1760 by Sidi Mohammed ben Abdullah, who needed a base from which to repress an Agadir revolt.
Essaouira is now a very laid-back town, with whitewashed buildings with painted shutters, artisan’s workshops, boatyards, and fishermen, which contrast sharply with Marrakech. Shopping, a peaceful walk (or camel ride!) down the beach, a walk to the harbor and ramparts, and even a boat tour are all options for the day.
A free excursion to continue exploring Essaouira’s winding back lanes and coastline ramparts. We return to Marrakech around midday, giving us time to do some last-minute shopping in the city. A Calèche ride (a brilliant green horse-drawn carriage) to the calm Majorelle Gardens, which are adorned in Indigo Blue and feature a modest Museum of Islamic Art, is one of the other activities available. A hammam, a traditional Moroccan bath, might be the ultimate indulgence.
We will transfer you back to the airport with many pleasant memories after our unforgettable 8-day tour from Fes Morocco Itinerary to Marrakech.
